Iowa Festival of Racing
The $250,000 Iowa Derby on June 27 at Prairie Meadows is shaping up to have a classic look.
At least one Kentucky Derby starter, 11th-place finisher Smooth Air, is likely for the Iowa Derby and six others from Triple Crown races are nominated. Zayat Stables has nominated seven horses, including Z Fortune and Z Humor, 10th and 14th in the Derby, plus Riley Tucker, 12th in the Preakness.
The Iowa Derby is part of the Iowa Festival of Racing on June 27-28, with six stakes races worth $1.2 million. The Cornhusker Breeders' Cup is the richest race at $300,000, but the strongest fields could be in Friday's Derby and $200,000 Iowa Oaks.
Smooth Air defeated Z Fortune in the $300,000 Ohio Derby on May 31. Trainer Bennie Stutts Jr. said he will come for the Iowa Derby, provided Smooth Air turns in a good workout Saturday at Arlington Park in Chicago. "We feel like this is a close race for him, and he would probably be one of the favorites," Stutts said. Before winning the Ohio Derby, Smooth Air was second by five lengths to Big Brown in the Florida Derby, but 7lengths ahead of the third-place horse. Then he had a troubled Derby. "He was eliminated at the gate," Stutts said. "He broke 18th, he broke in the air. ... If he had clear sailing, he might have hit the board (finished third)." Trainer Eoin Harty, who won the 2005 Iowa Derby with Shamoan, said he will be back with Tiz Now Tiz Then, who won his last two starts in Kentucky. California trainer Vladimir Cerin said air travel will determine if he starts Leonides, who was second in the Lone Star Derby. "It's not the easiest place to get to," Cerin said. Sebastian County, who won the Northern Spur Stakes, is nominated from singer Toby Keith's stable. Nominated, but less certain to come are Macho Again and Icabad Crane, second and third in the Preakness. They since ran in the Belmont Stakes on June 7.The Cornhusker could be headed by Delightful Kiss, who won last year's Iowa Derby, Temporary Saint, who won the Excelsior Handicap in New York, and either Fairbanks or Cowtown Cat from Todd Pletcher's stable. The top local contenders include Sumac, Wayzata Bay, Mr. Soul and R's Star.
The $200,000 Iowa Oaks will have a local flavor, with Rasierra, winner of the Panthers Stakes, and Maren's Meadow, owned by Des Moines' Sandra Rasmussen.
