Charles Town Sprint Festival

FIELDS SET FOR CHARLES TOWN SPRINT FESTIVAL

(Charles Town, WV) – Charles Town Races & Slots, drew post positions on Wednesday for its inaugural Sprint Festival held Saturday night, June 21st.

Saturday night’s feature, the $200,000 Charles Town Invitational Dash, a 4 ½ furlong sprint for three-year-olds and upward will be highlighted by starting high weight Joey P., from the Ben Perkins barn. The multiple stakes winner will be seeking his first win outside of his native New Jersey. Leading local rider Travis Dunkelberger has the call. The main competition for Joey P. could come in the form of the Anthony Dutrow trained Pete’s Wonder who comes off a second place finish to Ravalo in the Karl Boyes Memorial at Presque Isle Downs.

The $100,000 Lady Charles Town will see a strong field of 10 three-year-old fillies go to post. Hadavision, coming off a win in the Peach Blossom at Delaware Park figures to be among the favorites for trainer Mark Shuman. Hadavision may vie for favoritism with Casanova Killer who led at every call except the last in the Grade 3 Miss Preakness Stakes at Pimlico on May 16th. One more starter with stakes experience is Peisinoe, another Anthony Dutrow trainee. Peisinoe ships east after knocking heads with some of the top three-year-old fillies in the country at Santa Anita and Hollywood Park.

A talent laden field of three-year olds will head to post in the $100,000 Red Legend Stakes, the only stakes race on Saturday night’s card to be contested at 7 furlongs. Trainer Steve Asmussen sends out Devereux, who just missed in the $100,000 Matt Winn at Churchill in his last start. In addition to Devereux, Indy Joe, Magical Forest and Ghostly Thunder all enter the Red Legend off stakes wins in their most recent efforts. Of these, Indy Joe appears the most accomplished having captured the Rumson last out while losing by only 1 ½ lengths to the highly regarded Lantana Mob in the Grade 3 Hirsch Jacobs.

Rounding out the stakes will be the $100,000 West Virginia Sprint Derby, a 4 ½ furlong dash for three-year-olds. Asmussen figures to send out another tough runner in Stonestreet Song who enters the Sprint Derby off a stakes score at Sunland Park. Also figuring to attract attention is Bright Pick who ships down from Woodbine for respected conditioner Reade Baker.

Post time for the first race for the Charles Town Sprint Festival is 7:15 EST on June 21st. All four stakes will be part of an all stakes Pick Four comprising races five through eight, with the Charles Town Invitational Dash scheduled to be the eighth race with a post time of 10:00 PM.
